Experts support benefits of the electronic cigarette
We have reported on the many trials and research programmes that have continued to find that there are far less harmful effects from electronic cigarettes than from tobacco cigarettes. Indeed, they have supported the benefits that switching can bring to smokers in both the long and short term. In this blog we just wanted to look at two public health experts who have gone further than most in public support of the electronic cigarette.
Dr. Michael Siegel of the Boston University School of Public Health is is a professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health and has over 25 years of experience in the field of tobacco control. He is a acknowledged experts in his field, and has become one of the most vocal supporters of ecigs. In a report co-authored with Dr Zachery Cahn called “Electronic Cigarettes As A Harm Reduction Strategy For Tobacco Control” he conducted a thoroughly researched report across a wide range of brands as well as NRTs. He made a strong case for e cigs.
Dr. Brad Rodu, University of Louisville Department of Medicine, is head of of the Tobacco Harm Reduction movement at the University of Louisville’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center. He has also studied harm reduction methods for tobacco, and published a 2011 study called “The scientific foundation for tobacco harm reduction, 2006-2011” which reported favourably on the effectiveness of the electronic cigarette for smokers. Dr Radu had since gone further and urged public health policy maker’s to accept the ecig as a part of an effective harm reduction strategy.
E-Lites too have campaigned with a similar message for UK public health policy makers, and we have used the launch of the Stoptober campaign to widen the debate in the UK. We know from our social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter how effective users find their electronic cigarette, and we want to bring the evidence of the public, Dr Rodu and Dr Siegel to a wider audience.
