MvG Scoops Home Trophy
Michael van Gerwen added a second trophy to his glorious 2014 with victory at the Dutch Darts Masters tournament on Sunday.
Our man has already won the World Championship this year, and put another trophy in his cabinet when he saw off Mervyn King 6-4 in front of an expectant home crowd. Mighty Mike lives only half an hour away from the NH Hotel Koningshof in Veldhoven, where the tournament was held, and the local support was there for all to see. King put up a good performance but couldn’t live with E-Lites-backed Dutchman.
Not only that, van Gerwen has started the Premier League season in impressive form, seeing off 14-time champion and world number two Phil Taylor 7-0 in Liverpool, and then taking a 7-5 victory against Robert Thornton in Bournemouth on Feb 13. This Thursday he takes on Dave Chisnall in Belfast, before an all-Dutch match in Glasgow as he plays Raymond van Barneveld.
Speaking after the win, van Gerwen said "The crowd were awesome and I loved the tournament, and it was a great final too. We both had to push ourselves to the limit and both Mervyn and myself were very good in the final, but that's what we had to do to win this tournament."
Van Gerwen followed up this success last week with a 6-0 shutout of Michael Smith in the UK Open Qualifiers.
