MvG Still Top Despite Draw
Team E-Lites' very own World Number 1, Michael van Gerwen, ended the first phase of the Darts Premier League on top of the pile, despite a draw with bottom-of-the-table Simon Whitlock.
At the end of phase one, the bottom two of the ten-man league are eliminated. Whitlock only had pride to play for on Thursday, sitting bottom with no mathematical way of staying in the league. With the pressure off Whitlock, he took the game to van Gerwen, but as we know, Mighty Mike never rolls over easily and he stood his ground to tie the match 6-6.
It leaves MvG on top with six wins and two draws out of nine games. His nearest rival, Peter Wright, won his match against Gary Anderson, so was able to bring the gap down to just one point. In the second phase of the league, the top eight all play each other once more, as the tournament now visits Sheffield, Aberdeen, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Brighton. Then the top four will play-off for the title in London at the end of May.
With van Gerwen and E-Lites sitting pretty at the top of the league, the reigning champ is in a great position to be in that final in London, but he's got to hold his nerve for six more nights and seven more games. But of course, we believe he can, and more importantly, he believes he can.
