Paul Weller and the future of electronic cigarettes
We use our Facebook page to update our ‘fans’ with all the latest electronic cigarette news. From time to time we highlight newspaper reports on celebrities who have been photographed using e cigs. In the past month we have featured grizzled screen legend Jack Nicholson and ‘The Modfather’ Paul Weller.
Weller was reported by The Sun as being a big e cig enthusiast. He was quoted as saying “They are the future…They have helped me, as I haven’t smoked for two months now.”
Of course we all enjoy a bit of celeb gossip and news but there is a serious side to this too. A few chosen words from a musician, actor or TV star can have a very positive effect on people’s perception of electronic cigarettes. All the advertising and all the promotional activity e cig brands undertake can go by unnoticed by some but a splash in a tabloid will have a ‘fantastic’ reach. The M6Toll security ‘incident’ in July just underlined how far everybody involved with e cigs have still to go to get the message across to the general public – not even a ‘sales’ message, but some basic facts about how e cigarettes work and how safe they are.
Following the incident, the media has upped the level of features and reports on e cigs so this educational process will begin. Celebrity-driven stories will underline the message.
Let’s not forget that musicians, actors and stars do have an influence. Paul Weller still has lots of fans, and especially men in their forties and fifties who have followed and listened to Weller for over thirty years. The Sun splash would make them think (again) about giving up smoking, but also make them think that switching to ecigs is an OK thing to do. They will perhaps never be ‘cool’ again but, they reason, ‘if it’s OK for Paul, it’s OK for me.’
We need a lot more Paul Wellers. We need stories about celebs and stars who have appeal across the whole of society. We want the pop stars that twenty year old girls look up to be seen with e-cigs not tobacco cigarettes. We want the ‘Loose Women’ to been seen switching too as they will influence a wide female demographic. OK, we want a lot but we too have seen the future and are keen for the media to catch up.
