So close for MVG
Michael van Gerwen came within one match of retaining his Premier League Darts title on Thursday night at The O2 Arena, but was squeezed out by fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld.
The E-Lites man took the stage at another of E-Lites partners, The O2 Arena in London, and the two of the served up a tense final, each hitting multiple 180s in the first-to-ten match, and Mighty Mike was beaten 6-10 by a buoyant van Barneveld.
He trailed 3-5 at half-way at it set the precedent for the second half of the final; despite chasing van Barneveld all the way he couldn’t quite close the gap, with van Barneveld running on pure adrenalin in his first Premier League Final.
10,000 people crammed into The O2 to roar on our man, who got past Gary Anderson 8-7 in the semi-finals. As World Number 1, current Champion of the World and reigning Premier League Champion, MvG was certainly the bookies favourite to retain the title, but van Barneveld was on top form.
It’s non-stop for MvG, as he heads straight on to Crawley for the Players Championship, and then the Dubai Masters at the end of the month. Commiserations to Michael, but well done on a great performance throughout this 2014 season… and we believe Michael will be back to take the 2015 Premier League crown!
