Van Drives Into Last 16 Of Championship

Michael van Gerwen, the newest member of Team E-Lites, moved into the third round of the PDC World Darts Championship with victory over Kevin McDine on Sunday night.

The Geordie had no answer to van Gerwen’s impressive haul of eleven 180s, and Mighty Mike went 4-1 up to take victory in the second round match.

Michael is ranked number two in the world, and finds himself as the favourite to win the Championship after the shock exit of the world number one and reigning champion Phil Taylor, who was knocked out by world number 32 Michael Smith. It leaves van Gerwen in a very strong position to go on to take the title. Standing in his way next is 2011 runner-up Gary Anderson.

lgoo3Some of E-Lites’ other sporting partners were also in action this weekend. Derby County recorded their seventh successive victory at the weekend – a run of wins not seen at Derby since 1995. Their last defeat came almost two months ago. The visitors to the iPro Stadium were Doncaster Rovers, who were comfortably beaten 3-1 with goals coming from Jamie Ward, Simon Dawkins and Craig Bryson. Steve McLaren’s men now lie in fourth place in the Championship table and look good for a high finish.

Celtic were also in league action as they took on rock-bottom Hearts. Celtic had put seven past the Edinburgh club in a cup match earlier in the month but they were harder to grind down this time. Second-half goals from Kris Commons and James Forrest gave the league leaders a win, and a ten-point gap at the top.

lgoo5Worcester Warriors’ difficult season continued as they sunk to their tenth successive defeat. They lost 12-6 to rivals Gloucester in a match delayed by half an hour after a giant inflatable rugby ball broke the goalposts just before kickoff.

Nottingham Forest Ladies game against Sheffield Ladies FC was postponed due to bad weather conditions.
