cigarette price increaseAnother year, another budget, another increase in the price of cigarettes. In the 2012 budget, announced by the Chancellor George Osborne last month, the price of a packet of cigarettes saw an increase of 37 pence – 5 per cent above the rate of inflation.

This latest increase in price confirms that the price of cigarettes shows no signs of slowing. Taking into account the recent budget announcement, the price of cigarettes has gone up by over 80 pence per packet in the past two years; taking the price of premium tobacco brands to around £7.30 per pack. The 37 pence increase alone will leave a 20-a-day smoker over £135 worse off.

Smoking ban in prisons

A controversial ban which prevents prison inmates from smoking was brought into force in prisons in New Zealand on 1st July 2011. The ban saw all tobacco products, as well as lighters and cigarettes, become banned items. It is estimated that prior to the introduction of the ban, over 70% of the country’s prison population smoked – a figure well above the country’s national smoking average of only 20% of the population.

Radio 4 logoThe potential for E-Lites electronic cigarettes to dramatically reduce smoking-related illnesses was highlighted on BBC Radio 4’s You & Yours programme this week.

An estimated three million listeners heard E-Lites co-director Michael Ryan interviewed by presenter Winifred Robinson about the advantages of electronic cigarettes over traditional tobacco cigarettes.

The absence of tar, tobacco and other carcinogenic elements means that E-Lites offer a significantly healthier alternative to smokers, he said.

Marathon runners Keith and BenA reformed smoker from North London set a new personal record last weekend when he ran in the Bristol Half Marathon and raised more than £500 for charity.

Keith Brown, 25, was only able to compete in the event after switching from traditional cigarettes to the healthier alternative of E-Lites electronic cigarettes, which are free of tobacco, tar and carbon monoxide.

Having smoked for 10 years, Keith says he feels fitter and stronger than ever and could not have contemplated such an athletic challenge before making the switch to E-Lites.
